Autism Spectrum Disorder is a neurodevelopmental disability that causes significant impairments in one's social communication skills. These deficits are evident in social-emotional reciprocity, nonverbal communication used for social interactions as well as developing, maintaining and understanding relationships. In addition, it causes stereotyped or repetitive motor movements, insistence on sameness, highly restricted, fixed interests, and hyper or hypo-activity to sensory input.
Aside from social communication challenges and restricted and repetitive behaviors in individuals with Autism, there are other commonly associated conditions, such as, Anxiety Disorder (e.g. Generalized Anxiety, Specific Phobia, Social Anxiety), Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD), Language Disorder, and Sleep Disturbance, that pose as additional challenges. These comorbid conditions are addressed during the evaluation and appropriate recommendations are provided.
